Web Developer

at PBS NewsHour (Anywhere)


The Web Developer is part of a small team that builds PBS NewsHour digital products and services. PBS NewsHour has experienced massive growth and increased ratings and we are looking for someone who is excited about our work and interested in our brand of balanced journalism. You will have an opportunity to work on a variety exciting projects and partner with some of the biggest media brands.



RESPONSIBILITIES


  • Collaborate with team of designers, developers and editors to create responsive WordPress themes, plugins and new CMS features.

  • Assist digital team with management of high traffic WordPress instances.

  • Help develop MVC-based web applications and REST APIs from the ground-up.

  • Help perform QA for PBS NewsHour products and content.

  • Explore emerging technologies and services and assist with developing strategy for digital products

  • Perform related special projects or other duties as assigned.


 

QUALIFICATIONS


  • Expert knowledge and proficiency in PHP, including modern OO design patterns and frameworks.

  • Strong understanding of WordPress theme and plugin architecture.

  • Strong understanding of relational databases and SQL.

  • Front-end development experience with HTML5, Javascript, CSS.

  • Proficiency with version control systems such as Git.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and in a team environment.

  • Excellent organizational, project planning, presentation and time management skills with careful attention to detail needed.

  • An interest in journalism and public media.

  • Familiarity with:

    • Python and Django; AWS products and services is preferred.




 

EDUCATION


  • College degree in computer programming or related field.

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a web developer.

  • Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
