We’re Cosmic – a creative marketing agency specializing in social purpose brands. We’re on a mission to help brands with a social purpose play at the same level as their profit-driven competitors. With deep roots in our community, our studio is in the heart of downtown Santa Cruz, CA.

A bit about us:

We focus on strategy+design+technology. We value in-person collaboration. So, you’d work in our Santa Cruz studio. It’s a modern, light workspace within walking distance of restaurants, taprooms, and cool local shops. We work a 4-day week and believe that good work is sustained through true work/life balance.

We’re looking for a Lead Developer with an innate sense of design thinking. This position’s about much more than developing websites.

  • You have experience as a lead developer, and ideally agency or client-facing experience as well.

  • You instinctively think ahead, adapt, and quickly problem solve, all while keeping your cool.

  • You have the ability to remain flexible, iterate, and prioritize on a daily basis.

  • You have experience managing a development team.

  • You have experience developing complex CMS based websites (we use CraftCMS), integrating with third party API’s, and developing plug-ins to extend base CMS functionality.

  • You are extremely familiar with modern frontend technologies (CSS, Javascript).

  • You have a solid understanding of setting up and managing web servers and basic devops capabilities (ability to deploy code). Exceptional ability to translate designs into semantic, accessible front-end code. Strong understanding of modern web technologies and workflows.

  • Strong understanding of mobile & responsive design & development practices.

  • Solid understanding of GitHub/Version Control. Solid understanding and appreciation for color, typography, and composition.

  • Ability to work directly with designers to implement designs and provide design feedback if necessary.

  • Ability to defend and explain your technical recommendations to other team members, Creative Director, and clients.

  • You relish the ability to be involved with a project from start to finish.

  • You enjoy learning quickly and diving deep into each client’s world to understand their market space, how they function within it, and how we can help them meet their goals.

The Gig

Your day to day will be a mix of writing code for client projects and collaborating with/overseeing the Cosmic dev team.

  • Develop marketing websites, Ecommerce sites, and websites that edge into being mini applications.

  • Develop integrations with third party API’s and Applications.

  • Help evolve the processes for the Cosmic development team to keep current on developing and evolving technology and platforms.

  • Help mentor and train the Cosmic development team.

  • Provide strategic input during the sales process for digital solutions for clients.

  • Provide input during the pricing process to establish timeframes and rough pricing for projects.

  • Establish and maintain Cosmic code standards and frameworks as well as documentation for easy communication and evolution of these code standards for use with in-house developers and outside development teams.

  • Develop in-house tools, workflows, and starters to simplify the development process in-house and provide consistency when used by the Cosmic team.

  • Work with both in-house developers and outside development teams in regards to strategic approach to projects, technology stack choices, and problem solving.

  • Develop a workflow and establish a process for the oversight of the development workflow, code review, testing process, server setups, and maintain standards of all code produced across the team.

  • Research and discover new technology that could be relevant to or used as part of the sales process to bring in new clients from the social purpose sector.

  • Stay up to date on the technology used in donor engagement, social engagement, sales processes, and emerging technology trends that could support clients in the social purpose market space.

  • Establish standards for hiring in-house developers for Cosmic. Participate in the hiring and training process as needed.

  • Establish standards for hiring outside development contractors and teams.

  • Participate in vetting teams, negotiating contracts, and establishing workflows.
